The groom's wardrobe: sherwani, suits and everything after

Grooms get about a tenth of the planning and roughly the same share of the budget, then appear in every single photograph. Here's how to do that side properly.

What he actually needs

The wedding outfit Sherwani or an achkan, usually with a stole, safa and footwear. The one piece worth real money and real time.

Reception A suit, a tuxedo or an indo-western. Different register entirely, and often where he's most comfortable.

Sangeet and cocktail Bandhgala, a jacket, or something lighter he can move in. He will be dancing; plan for it.

Haldi and mehendi Kurta pyjama in cotton or light silk, in a colour that survives turmeric and sunlight.

The forgotten ones Footwear for each outfit, a watch, cufflinks, the brooch, and something to travel in. These always get left to the last week.

Fit is the whole game

  • Shoulders first. A sherwani that's wrong in the shoulder can't be rescued; everything else can be adjusted.
  • Sleeve length over the actual shirt he'll wear, not a t-shirt.
  • Sit down and raise both arms at the fitting. Weddings involve a lot of both.
  • Set the length over the actual shoes — buy footwear before the final fitting.
  • Check the collar height against his neck. A tall collar on a short neck is the most common unflattering choice.
  • Decide the stole and buttons with the outfit, not after. They change its whole character.

A made-to-measure sherwani needs weeks, and more in season. Ready-to-wear plus alteration is faster but the shoulder has to be right off the rack. Either way, start the groom's side at the same time as the bride's — not afterwards. The date doesn't move for him either.

On coordinating

Matching exactly almost never looks as good as people expect, and it dates badly in photographs. Sharing a palette — a tone picked up in his stole, or a shade that sits beside hers rather than on top of it — looks considered. Bring a cutting of your fabric to his fitting, not a photo of it.

Neha's shortlist

I keep my own shortlist of the shops I actually send brides to here — the ones whose work, pricing and after-sales I've tested myself. I don't publish that list publicly, because a shop that was brilliant last season isn't automatically brilliant this one, and I'd rather give you a current answer than an old one. Ask me on a call and you'll get the names, the lane, and who to ask for.

Both sides, one timeline

The Family Strategy Session maps the groom's wardrobe alongside yours — so his fittings and yours don't collide in the last fortnight.
